Feathered robe
HI 5166   The Kuril Ainu, Kuril Islands
Feathered robe

This exhibit shows a robe used for daily wear by the Kuril Ainu. This robe is made from the feathers and skins of such seabirds as the tufted puffin, rhinoceros auklet, and Laysan albatross. The bird skins are carefully processed to preserve the colors of the feathers, by spreading the skins at the back, the side, or at the belly. The exhibited robe is a replica, based on one owned by Hokkaido University.
