Kazakh tent

In Kazakhstan, most people used to live a nomadic life up until the early 20th century when the Soviet Union encouraged them to settle. This exhibit is a tent from the Adai people of the Mangishlak Peninsula. The frame of this tent, which can be disassembled for transportation on horseback or in a cart, was made by Karakalpak people in the early 20th century. The interior furniture well represents traditional craftwork of Kazakh people. Most articles, including the felts, carpets, and tapestries, are made of wool from their major livestock, sheep. It took almost twenty years for the housewife of the family that owned this tent to complete all these fabrics. Their beauty shows the wealth of this family.
