Horse-headed lutes and bows

A horse-headed lute has a trapezoid body and a long fingerboard decorated at the end with a horse-head carving. The two strings and the bow are made from horsetail hair. Bodies of some lutes are covered with goatskin. Since the strings are set high above the fingerboard, players often push the strings up with the back of their fingers as well as pressing them.
