Birch-bark container

Berries are stored in this type of container. Surface patterns are drawn in tusche on a thin sheet of birch bark. Some containers, including this exhibit, are decorated by pasting together such sheets with the patterns cut out, while others are decorated with direct carvings on the surface. This whirling pattern is characteristic of the Amur and Sakhalin regions.
