Chinese opera, also known as Beijing opera, originated when local theatrical companies from the Anhui Province (Hui company) and the Hubei Province (Chinese opera) amalgamated in Beijing. Since then, Chinese opera has developed, influenced by the Mandarin language and incorporating the elements of diverse local plays in China. Today, there are over 1,000 plays, with 300 to 400 of them most often performed.
