Tops for women of minority peoples in southwestern China are usually secured by stringed buttons on the right side, just as in the clothing of Han women. While pants are commonly worn, long skirts with a wide neckline are preferred in the northern regions near Tibet. The women of the groups engaged in slash-and-burn farming in the mountainous regions wear active short skirts, along with protective leggings. The Dai and other peoples in southern Yunnan usually wear long, cylindrical wrap around skirts.
