Hiki-yama float

A variety of floats appear in local festival processions. They usually have sophisticated decorations. Some floats have gold and silver designs on lacquered surfaces, some use tapestries from overseas, and others carry dolls and other figures. Floats sometimes provide a stage for performing arts as well. This exhibit is a hiki-yama float that was used in the spring festival of Nagahama area, along the northeastern coast of Lake Biwa. Children perform kabuki on hiki-yama floats.
