- Akiyama, Nagano Prefecture

Akiyama is a mountain village with heavy snowfall, in between Nagano and Niigata prefectures. At around the end of the Edo period (ca. 1850), some 600 people lived in 13 villages in the Akiyama area. About eight persons lived in the exhibited house, which was built around that time. No special floor was constructed in this house, but the residents lived on the dirt floor. Walls and roof were made of thatch in those days.
