Auto-rickshaws are simple taxis commonly found throughout South Asia. The origin of the word rickshaw is believed to be the Japanese jinrikisha. These light, simple vehicles are converted from motorbikes by setting passenger seats in the rear. Auto-rickshaws are not very stable, but are capable of agile moves and are ideal for transportation over short distances. Although there is a set official rate, and the vehicles are equipped with odometers, the fee is often settled through negotiation.
