- Toraja, Sulawesi, Indonesia

The Toraja in Sulawesi cultivate rice in wet paddies on terraced fields in the mountainous regions. Unhusked rice grains are stored in granaries in which the rice spirit is believed to reside. Granaries are thatched with bamboo, and the exterior walls are decorated with carvings of water buffaloes, chickens and the sun, all important symbols in Toraja myths and rituals.
