Across coastal Southeast Asia from the Malay Peninsula through Indonesia and reaching as far as the southern part of the Philippines, nomadic boat-dwelling peoples live in family boats, engaging in small scale trading and fishery. The exhibited houseboat with its unique extended bow is known among the Bajau as a lepa, and was built by specially qualified boat-builders. Houseboats of this type can be seen from the north coast of Borneo to the Sulu Archipelago in the southern part of the Philippines.
