The “Chechemeni” (ocean-going canoe)
OS 0071   Satawal Island, Federated States of Micronesia

Ocean-going canoe

Large sailing single-outrigger canoes of this type are used for long-distance cruises and fishing expeditions. Side planks are attached to a lower hull carved from a single tree. The bow and stern have the same shape, allowing the canoe to go in either direction. All joints are bound with ropes and do not need any metal parts or fittings. The canoe shown here successfully completed a 3,000-kilometer voyage from Satawal Island to the 1975 International Ocean Exposition held in Okinawa.
