OS 0026   Marshall Islands, Republic of the Marshall Islands

Navigation chart

Navigation charts such as this one are made of coconut palm leafstalks and seashells. The shells indicate islands, and the palm leafstalks indicate sea currents. These charts were used only for instruction, and were not taken on actual voyages. Although long-distance voyages by canoe are no longer made around the Marshall Islands, navigation charts are still produced as souvenirs for tourists.
