Bark cloth (tapa)

The inner bark of the paper mulberry tree is soaked in water, then strips are pounded flat and intermeshed to form bark cloth, or tapa. Japanese paper is made with the same bark, in a related process. The word tapa, which was originally used in the Cook and Society Islands, was introduced into Europe, later signifying bark cloth in general.
