International Academic Exchange
As Japan’s largest institution specializing in cultural anthropology and ethnology, the National Museum of Ethnology (MINPAKU) has developed relations with individual overseas researchers through invitational programs for visiting fellows and joint research projects. Targeted at museum curators from developing countries, this course is designed to improve trainees’ skills for collecting, organizing, studying, displaying, and storing their communities’ artifacts, thereby helping them use museums more effectively to promote cultural activities in their home countries. This course originated at the International Cooperation Seminar on Museology, a three-week course conducted at MINPAKU as part of JICA’s group seminar on “Museum Management Technology.” Since 2004, MINPAKU has been fully entrusted by JICA to offer a four-month program titled “Intensive Course on Museology” in collaboration with the Lake Biwa Museum in Shiga. Each year, this course plans to receive participants from approximately ten countries.
