FY2001
This research seeks to clarify how indigenous peoples in the circum-Pacific region
(tropical, semi-tropical and frigid, semi-frigid zones) and the Arctic region
utilize and manage marine resources which are coastal or migrate over wide areas.
Our major goals are to comparatively research various contemporary problems related
to the use of natural resources by indigenous peoples, in terms of living and
commercial usage, rights of indigenous people and resource usage, legal confrontations
based on laws of customary law, sustainable resource management and conservation,
ethnic knowledge and environmental issues.
