刊行の目的および意義
本書はシベリアのトナカイ遊牧コリヤークの生態と世界観に関する、フィールドワークに基づいた民族学（文化人類学）的記載と分析である。本書刊行の目的の第１は20世紀初頭の民族誌においても不完全にしか、あるいは全く記載されていなかったカムチャツカ半島北部太平洋岸のオリュートルスキー・コリヤークの民族学的一次資料の提示とその分析にある。第２に、新たなフィールドワークの方法論とその記載の試み ─ 自然誌的方法論 ─ の提示である。第３に北方地域の民族学的課題 ─ トナカイ遊牧の位置づけ、文化 ─ 社会変化、将来の展望など ─ の考察である。
国立民族学博物館における各個研究課題「北方地域諸文化の比較研究」の研究成果の発表の場として国立民族学博物館より刊行を計画するものであり、海外に広く最新の学術研究情報を発信し、さらに、日本の研究者による新たな民族学（文化人類学）的枠組みと方法論の試みを提示することにより、当該分野における研究を推進することを、刊行の目的及び意義とする。
