In this paper, I would like to shed some light on how minority groups can gain access to land that is exclusively owned by indigenous peoples. Through a case study of the immigrant communities of Solomon Islanders on Viti Levu, Fiji, I unpack the fact that 1) the important factor is their marriage practice which consciously or unconsciously favors marriage with indigenous Fijians and 2) their practice can be divided into two categories such as a type of marriage out to Fijian community, and a type of enrollment as members of Native Land Register (iVola ni Kawabula).

Building of Socio-musical Identity in Modern Hindustani Music: Focusing on
Connection with Caste-based Census and Nautch-related Issues in British India
Masakazu Tamori

This paper is an attempt at an anthropological and socio-historical study that examines how musicians in modern India have been building their sociomusical identity on the concept of gharānā, which is a characteristic school and social organization in the world of north Indian classical music (Hindustani music). It focuses on how the caste-based census and nautch-related issues, i.e. looking down on musicians who accompanied nautch/dancing girls, in British-ruled India have impacted the identification of musicians today.
It is not an exaggeration to say that the ultimate aim of Indian classical music is its delineation of rāga. In the performance of rāga in Hindustani music, the personal understanding, imagination, expression and technique of the performer are of course important, but a musician never fails to stress the importance of the authority and authenticity of his gharānā.
There have been multiple gharānās in each genre, i.e. vocal, instrumental and dance, of Hindustani music. The particular point is the connection between the oral narratives of musicians about “themselves” and “others” and the relevant history. It was from the 20th century that Hindustani musicians in the larger cities started talking about “themselves” by utilizing the concept of gharānā with Seniyā, and about “others” as Mīrāsī in some cases. Seniyās were the descendants of Miyan Tansen, who was one of the nine jewels and the legendary most accomplished musician in the court of Akbar (reign.1556–1605), the third Mughal Emperor. In this paper, the term Seniyā refers to the direct descendants of Tansen, and Seni-gharānā is used for the groups, including disciples, who do not have a blood relationship with Seniyās. It is thought that there were four socio-musical categories of musicians, Kalāwant, Qawwāl, Ḍhāḍhi and Mīrāsī, before the concept of gharānā became common. The head musician of the Kalāwant at the Mughal court was Miyan Tansen. On the other hand, it is hard to find any mention of the category of Mīrāsī as court musician in the materials of the Mughal period. This paper focuses on the Mīrāsī that were considered to be crystallized in the caste-based census of British-ruled India and the process by which they came to be generally regarded as accompanists and assistants of nautch/dancing girls, i.e. prostitutes.
This paper first extracts the socio-musical categories from the oral narratives of contemporary musicians about their own gharānās and the others. And next it examines how those narratives and categories connect with the socio-cultural history of India. Finally, it makes clear how the caste-based census and the aftermath of nautch-related issues have impacted the reflexive identification of musicians today, and how gharānā as a socio-musical identity in Hindustani music became involved with Seniyā and why the Hindustani musicians are trying to eliminate the connection with Mīrāsī as a caste.

Phonetic Analysis of dGudzong Tibetan
The Vernacular of Khams Tibetan spoken in the rGyalrong Area

dGudzong Tibetan is spoken in Danba County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in West Sichuan, China. It belongs to “twenty-four-villages’ patois,” an independent dialect group of Khams Tibetan spoken in the rGyalrong area. Apart from my several linguistic reports, there are no detailed descriptions of this variety of Khams Tibetan. In this paper, the phonetic analysis of the dGudzong dialect is treated with special attention paid to the synchronic phonological framework of the dGudzong dialect as well as to several remarkable diachronic features through a comparison with Written Tibetan forms. The phonetic analysis is divided into three parts: consonants, vowels and suprasegmentals; the diachronic analysis also mentions typological characteristics among the Khams Tibetan dialects. At the end of the article, a list of the basic vocabulary (ca. 1000 words) is added.

This paper explores the semantic and syntactic structure of names for plants and animals in a variety of languages, including English, Chinese, and Lahu, with additional examples from Thai, Japanese, and other languages. Cross-linguistic similarities and differences in the nomenclatural strategies of these languages are discussed, with special emphasis placed on compound names for plants that include animal names, and vice versa (e.g. tiger lily, pine rat).

Contesting the Streets: Shelter-Resistant Homeless Men and
Encampments in Japan, America and Britain

The streets are contested space. According to context that contest can take many forms, but this paper, written as part of the Minpaku project on “anthropology of the streets,” deals with a particularly literal form of street contestation: that which occurs between homeless people and other players in the urban environment—mainstream society and the city authorities. Using case studies from Japan, the U.S.A. and Britain, this paper studies individual and collective responses to the challenges of living on the streets—broadly defined to include other public spaces—in 21st century industrialized cities. Homeless people are often portrayed as passive victims of modern urban society. In fact they show a range of strategies in their frequent encounters with the authorities, ranging from reluctant accommodation to active resistance.
