Research Topics:
Nanami Suzuki, Ph.D., is professor and director of the Center for Research Development at the National Museum of Ethnology (Osaka), National Institutes for the Humanities, and professor of the Graduate University for Advanced Studies. A cultural anthropologist, she received her B.S. in Pharmacy from Tohoku University, and her Ph.D. from Ochanomizu University. She is active in research, speaking, and publishing on issues of resilient community development by focusing on the processes in which people of every generation search for aging-in-place by sustaining interdependent relationships in multicultural aging societies. She is currently conducting the following research projects: International Collaborative Research Project: Ideas and Practices for Creating “Age-friendly Communities” (JSPS KAKENHI); Cultural Anthropology Research on Older Adults’ Well-being and the Application of Complimentary Medicine in Switzerland (JSPS KAKENHI). She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters, and the author of Historical Anthropology of Childbirth: From the Deconstruction of Midwifery to the Natural Birth Movement, 1997 (in Japanese, 13th Aoyama Nao Award (History of Women) 1998) and Historical Anthropology of Healing: The Symbolism of Herbs and Water, 2002 (in Japanese). She is the editor of The Anthropology of Aging and Well-being: Searching for the Space and Time to Cultivate Life Together.
