Event overview
In this film event, we will show The Voyage of the Chechemeni, a documentary capturing the journey of the Micronesian voyaging canoe Chechemeni, which has been on display in the Oceania Exhibition Hall of our main building since 1977. The film documents the canoe’s voyage to the Okinawa Ocean Expo held in 1975. This special exhibition also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Chechemeni’s historic voyage. The film is closely related to the theme of the exhibition, which explores the Chechemeni and traditional Micronesian navigation.
For this event, we will invite Mr. Osamu Monden, who was involved in the production of the film of Chechemeni’s voyage; Mr. Yoshiharu Sekino, who successfully completed a 4,700-kilometer voyage in a handmade dugout canoe; and Ms. Kazuyo Hayashi, who actually participated in a traditional navigation journey aboard a single-outrigger canoe from Satawal Island, traveling from Yap to Palau. Together, they will delve into the significance of this film and share behind-the-scenes stories.
