Objectives
Western universities have a regular course for anthropological history. Academic Societies for the study of anthropological history have also been organized, and biographies of prominent anthropologists have been published. However, research on the history of anthropology outside Japan is Eurocentric and completely disregards Japanese research. The National Museum of Ethnology has archives of information that is valuable for the study of the history of anthropology in Japan. The objective of this inter-university research project is to utilize these resources to drive the study of the history of anthropology in Japan while incorporating research trends outside Japan. The National Museum of Ethnology is an inter-university research institute that houses the most comprehensive collection of anthropological materials in Japan, and utilizing its collection is a crucial part of studying the history of anthropology. This is also helpful in referring to research trends in the history of anthropology outside Japan.
