趣旨
日本にとってオーストラリア北部に位置するゼナドスケス（トレス海峡）は、特別な土地である。戦前においては真珠貝採取を行う日本人ダイバーの移民先であり往事は日本人の集住地であった。いまでも県人会や姉妹都市の協定を通じた関係が続いている。また戦後の1975年には、19世紀のケンブリッジ大学によるトレス海峡調査隊に次ぐ包括的な調査隊が藪内芳彦、大島襄二ら日本人によって敢行されている。この調査隊はゼナドスケスに複数回にわたり足を運び700頁を超える報告書を刊行した。そのほか、何千枚の写真、何百枚の地図、さらには伝統的な音楽についての音源を残すなど多大なる成果を上げている。日本とオーストラリアのゼナドスケスとの繋がりは、このように長いあいだ人的交流や研究活動を通じて継続されてきたといえるのである。
今回のシンポジウムでは、上述したトレス海峡研究会の50周年を記念して、ゼナドスケス、オーストラリア、日本の三者が協働してトレス海峡調査隊とその現代における意義を再検討する研究成果を公開する。トレス海峡調査の行われた背景から、彼ら調査隊が残した資料が現在のトレス海峡社会にいかに注目され、活用されているのかなどが議論されます。
