主題・内容

東アジアは、イネ、アワ、キビなどの作物が栽培化された世界の農耕センターの一つである。これらの起源地は、現在の中国内であることが知られているが、それらの作物は東アジアの各地に拡散していった。同時に、
北海道のように到達しなかった地域もみられる。本書は、東アジアの各地域とくに中国、台湾、日本列島を対象にする研究成果を統合して現時点における東アジアにおける農耕の導入の過程、および社会の変容などを解明している。

米国(Pei-Linほか)、日本(池谷ほか)、中国(Mengほか)の研究者による国際共同研究の成果である。これまで西アジアの小麦、中米のトウモロコシの起源と拡散については英語圏の研究が多いが、東アジアの研究は言語の壁などがあり、これまで統合したものはみられない。日本列島は、どうして農耕の導入が遅れたのか、狩猟採集社会の持続力が強いのか、本書から明らかにされる。なお、歴博と民博の研究者による共同研究にもなっている。
