現代エジプトの空手家コミュニティに関する社会人類学的研究

研究の目的（2011年度の活動報告）

本研究の目的は、エジプトを代表する大衆的スポーツである空手家コミュニティ（競技者、指導者、父兄）の事例より、中流層的な倫理観とモダニティの関係性を再考することにある。中東におけるモダニティの系譜を探求するに際し、「社会階層」は最も有用な切り口の一つである。近年、新自由主義経済の広がりにより、学歴や所得で中流層と下流層を差異化することがより困難になる中、「教養」の有無を指標とする新たな「階層観」が構築されつつある。この文脈において本研究は、エジプトのスポーツ実践に象徴された「身体化された教養」をめぐるポリティクスを、西洋的近代性に代わる、独自のモダニティを創出する試みとして考察する。

研究の成果（2011年度の活動報告）

今年度は、エジプトの空手実践に関する研究を始めるに際し、都市部で予備調査を行った結果、空手の指導者や競技者の父兄が熱心に語る、空手の様々な「効果」についての言説に着目するようになった。空手教室の指導者の多くは、空手が競技会での勝利を目的とした「リヤーダ（スポーツ）」であることを強調し、単なる「fun（お遊び、楽しみ）」であってはいけないと主張する。こういった、目的意識や結果に力点を置き、享楽的な行為を批判する傾向は、中流層の倫理観に支えられたエジプト的モダニティの特徴で（Armbrust 1999）、同様の語彙が、民衆的イスラームや農民などの「反近代的な事象」を批判する文脈にも登場する（Schielke 2006、Gasper 2009）。イスラーム人類学では、機能主義的な語彙で特定の行為を正当化したり、物事を説明したりする傾向を、エジプトにおけるイスラームの現代的な特徴として説明してきた（Starrett 1998）。 しかし、聖典クルアーンの暗誦教室と同様に、空手教室が子供の「アクル（頭脳、知性）」と「ジスム（身体）」を鍛えるのに「効果的」であるとする言説を鑑みると、機能主義的な語彙が、イスラームだけに留まらず、社会の多様な事象を説明する際に使われていることを示している。空手に関する機能主義的言説を中流層の階層意識との関係性において分析した成果を、次の論文集に所収される一章として発表する予定である。
